Is This the BEST FRESHMAN in College Lacrosse?
How to train like Brennan O'Neill, huge lacrosse matchups, and more.
Good morning,
I’m Jake and this is Recruit Report presented by Apex Lacrosse Events.
I’m your friend who tells you everything you need to know about lacrosse.
Spots for Apex 60 Showcase are almost full.
Over 650 ALUMNI are now playing college lacrosse, and there’s over 80 college lacrosse coaches attending.
Spots are closing soon, and you can fill out an interest form here.
Now, let’s get into it!
Is This the BEST FRESHMAN in College Lacrosse?
Meet Hunter Chauvette.
The lefty sharpshooter from Ohio committed to Yale as a junior in 2021. He was ranked as a 4-star recruit, with 5 attackmen ahead of him in the class.
Fast-forward to summer 2023. Hunter came off of a stellar senior season, helping Lawrenceville reach the #1 spot in the high school lacrosse rankings.
He was months away from heading to Yale, when all of a sudden his plans changed. He decided to join his brother Cam in Baltimore and play for Johns Hopkins.
It looks like his decision is quickly paying off, as he’s scored a hat trick in his first two games for the Blue Jays.
He was initially projected to be a 4th attackman or 2nd-line midfielder, but it looks like he’s finding a way to the starting lineup.
I called it last week and I’m calling it again, Hunter Chauvette might just be the best freshman in college lacrosse.
How to Train Like Brennan O’Neill
@mitchellpehlke Secret to why Brennan O’Neill is ELITE! #duke #lacrosse #brennanoneill
Brennan O’Neill is one of the most talented players in lacrosse today. When he speaks, I listen.
When I came across this clip (above) of O’Neill talking about his training process, I knew we were in for something good.
After watching the clip, here are my two takeaways:
“Don’t Think” - When Brennan is in a game, he’s not thinking, he’s doing. This doesn’t mean he isn’t trying. It’s actually quite the opposite: because he’s put in so much work in practice, he can relax his mind during the game. You might have heard coaches say “get in the zone” or athletes say that they’re in a “flow state.” It’s all the same thing. The only way to accomplish this state is by practicing so hard that it comes natural in the game. This should give you extra motivation to practice this week.
Freestyle Training - When you’re practicing lacrosse, it’s important to have a plan of what you’re trying to accomplish during that training session. At the same time, you don’t want to be so regimented that what you’re training for is nothing like a game. Brennan stresses the importance of improvising parts of your practice in order to simulate what things will be like in a game.
Try these strategies out in your lacrosse game, and let me know what you think!
This Weekend in College Lacrosse
It was a great opening weekend in lacrosse, and the second weekend looks to have even better matchups. Here’s a few I’m excited for:
Virginia vs. Michigan: Both teams enter this year with a ton of expectations. Michigan is coming off their best season yet, and Virginia looks poised for a national championship run with the talent they have. This will be a fun, fast-paced game to watch.
Loyola vs. Maryland: Loyola is coming off a statement win against Georgetown, and Maryland barely squeaked by Richmond last weekend. A win against the Terps would put Loyola in an incredible spot to start the year.
Johns Hopkins vs Georgetown: Hopkins rebounded on Tuesday after a tough loss to Denver last weekend. Georgetown lost by more than expected to Loyola. Both teams are hungry, and this will be an exciting game to watch.
Featured Recruit: Kody Haan (Class of 2026)
Now that most of the top recruits in the class of 2025 have committed, it’s time to look at the next class of players: the class of 2026.
This class is loaded with sophomores ready to make an impact this season, and one of those is Kody Haan.
The lefty sniper from ADVNC (California) reminds me of Hunter Chauvette mentioned above. He can uncork the ball from low angles, and his left handed shooting stroke is extremely difficult for goalies to track.
I don’t think this is the last time we’ll be hearing Kody’s name.
As always, his highlights are on repeat for me this week!
Remember, every week we feature a recruit. Respond to this email to nominate a player!
Talk to you soon.
P.S. Make sure to fill out an interest form before the Apex 60 Showcase before spots close.
Best,
Jake
